Nightstar padded quietly down towards the shore of the lake, ears erect and alert to any noises of the surroundings, and eyes scanning the area for the slightest quiver of a bush, or the rustle of prey in the reeds. All was quite silent at the moment, however, except for the lapping of the small waves on the lake's bank.
She suddenly felt compelled to sit down by the shore, and she did in a spot between the reeds where she could look out onto the lake, seeing almost across the whole body of water. The sun was setting, and casting its dying rays onto the lake, making the colors dance and shimmer in pinks, blues, and oranges. It was a beautiful sight, but something still made her feel almost... melancholy.
Staring out, she simply watched the water for several minutes, and then began talking aloud to herself quietly, as she sometimes did when she was alone and not hunting at the moment.
"This place is beautiful, but sometimes... sometimes I wish that we were at the territory of old still... Firestar used to tell me about it so much, and it sounded like it was fit for the Clans in so many ways..."
Just thinking about it, she could picture what the old home must have been like. Trees surrounding you, fresh air, pristine rivers...
But then again, how was that any different from here? Apparently Twolegs were a large problem for the Clans in the days of old, while now... they were rarely bothered by humans at all. And the air here was fresh, the rivers clear. What more could they want?
"I suppose nothing, really..." Nightstar sighed. What was it then that was making her so... serious, and sad these days sometimes?
"Perhaps... it's because I'm thinking what it would have been like if I were to be a medicine cat instead, or a normal warrior..."
True, when she was a kit, she had seriously considered becoming her mother's.... Leafpool's apprentice. Learning of herbs and tending to injuries of her fellow Clanmates seemed like a good choice in life... but then again, she wouldn't experience the fierce joy of running beside her friends, and battling for her Clan. And if she were to walk the path of a medicine cat, she would never be able to have a mate... which may not have bothered her when she was an apprentice, but now already she thought she might have her affections directed somewhere, though where even she herself was clueless.
"But then again... even though I have so much more responsibility than the normal warrior, I have so many joys that the path that was alone could not have offered... In ways that are both of tangible existance, and in pure spirit."
Looking down into the water in front of her, she saw a mirror image of her staring back up at her. Jet black fur with slightly longer parts on her face, emerald green eyes... these were all a part of her. And so, she thought, was being a leader. Even if sometimes there was much regret to be found, what's done has been done, and it cannot be changed, so I must find happiness in where I have chosen to place my paws...
Stretching, and taking one last look at the cat reflected in the water that was her, Nightstar padded back up the slope to go patrol the borders and hunt, tail held high in her revelation.
